Things I've Noticed During My Several Rewatches of The Doomstar Requiem
(Lock in, this is gonna be long)
Tumblr media
Murderface is the only one out of the group to have a completely obscured face, possession foreshadowing perhaps? Also he lacks the golden streaks on the halo-esque circles behind them. Inch resting... (Not gonna talk too much abt when the scene goes red and the beam behind Murderface is dripping blood because I believe it's already been talked about before by others, and I don't want to include anything in this post that's already been discussed) Also I love how all of their weapons match their instruments
Tumblr media
The way Toki doesn't even flinch when he gets alcohol poured on his wound is heartbreaking, likely either because the torture his parents put him through as a kid has given him a wicked pain tolerance or because he's so dissociated, similarly to how he behaves in Dethfam when his parents are around or Dethzazz when he's mentally in the punishment hole (I do believe this sort of catatonic state he's in is what's causing him to seem so much worse off than Abigail—though his untreated diabetes + Magnus targeting him more because of his relation to Dethklok probably also adds to it—he's likely not really eating or taking care of himself)
Tumblr media
At first I thought that Magnus was feeding them dog food, but on closer inspection I actually believe it to be human remains. Yeesh. You can see it really looks like muscle fibers, and there's bones, as well as skin that still has hair on it. Magnus Hammersmith they could never make me like you
Tumblr media
On the table is the Klokateer from Tracking/Ishnifus and The Challenge!!
Tumblr media
I think it's interesting how much Nathan's fantasies look like Toki's! I just think it's neat! They're more similar than they seem :)
Tumblr media
This is the most expressive we've ever seen Charles and it makes my heart hurt AUUGHH
Tumblr media
The way Nathan licks his lips/teeth after the "How can I be a hero when my dick's as big as a shoe" line. DISGUSTING /affectionate
Tumblr media
Does this fan look familiar? He should, because it's Dethklok's son, Fatty Ding Dong!! Good to see he's doing well lol, and his real name is Rick, we can also assume that at LEAST four years have passed since season 1, since in season 1 episode 10, he's said to be 14. Since he has a roommate now, he is likely to be around 18 years old
Tumblr media
(Apologies for the low quality screencap I had to nab this from Youtube) I kind of wish that the animators didn't change this original animation for the end of The Fans Are Chatting. I just feel like Nathan pushing away the Klokateers is more symbolically relevant. Nathan is quite literally pushing away the safety and security his avoidance has given him, the hologram disappearing and the fans leaving is a metaphor for the fact that he can no longer keep himself deluded into thinking that everything is fine, he can't hide from the truth anymore
Tumblr media
Almost all of the Rock A Roonie Fantasy Camp counsellors came to the Dethklok audition, there's even the depressed blues guy in the background. There's also Sammy Candynose from Snakes 'n Barrels, so I like to think that Pickles told him about the auditions
Tumblr media
There's also the guitarist from Get Thee Hence
Tumblr media
Toki's shadow!!! The wings!!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The animals they take the form of match two of the guitars Brendon Small created with Gibson, The Thunderhorse and the Snow Falcon :D
Tumblr media
It's super tiny but their smiles :'))!!! Also the way their parts play on different sides when you listen with headphones but then combine at this part makes me so crazy. Not only does Toki challenge Skwisgaar and inspire him to get better, but they're also having fun! Which I can imagine never really happened when he played with Magnus
Tumblr media
Probably just an animation error but Skwisgaar is animated as his present day self here. Idk, just thought that was interesting
I think the order of the rest of the band joining in on the background vocals is really interesting, it goes: Skwisgaar, Pickles, Nathan, Murderface. Personally I choose to interpret it as a representation of how long it took each member to warm up to Toki as their rhythm guitarist, Skwisgaar was super fast since he was the one to choose him, Pickles was the one wanting a new guitarist in the first place, Nathan and Magnus seemed to be close, so it would definitely take more time for him to accept Toki as the whole Magnus situation would still feel a little raw, and Murderface is a professional hater so of course it took him the longest
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I really love just how soft and content Murderface looks in Toki's fantasy. We all know he has a softer side and I think that either Toki perceives it, or possibly Murderface shows it towards him (Which I can believe because they're often together and they get along pretty well, Toki is probably the person Murderface gets along with the best actually)
I also want to mention that at this part of I Believe, Toki is no longer singing along with the other's background vocals, and is harmonizing with himself, which gets really sad when you realize that it's because this was just Toki remembering this to keep himself sane and he's actually kidnapped, hurt, and alone. Ouch :(
Tumblr media
The drunk driver who crashed into the Jomfru brothers is the same guy who crashed into Nathan's second grade class in Dethgov. I guess there's only one drunk driver that exists in the Metalocalypse universe lol
Tumblr media
I think we as a fandom need to appreciate Eric Jomfru more. He's such a real one. The way they make you care about him after he's already gone is so evil lol /affectionate
Tumblr media
The way the Klokateers join in on this song makes me wonder if perhaps they view each other as brothers, or if there's just like a strong sense of brotherhood between them
Tumblr media
The groupie on the left can actually be seen in Fatherklok at the beginning of the episode, as one of the women Skwisgaar has been with, so y'know what? She has valid reasons to be mad honestly
Tumblr media
Murderface's pose up top always sends me, sir please calm down, keep it together king
Tumblr media
Murderface holding his wrist :(
Tumblr media
If you look closely, you can actually see that the Revengeancers are eating Ishnifus. Which is just,, utterly horrifying
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In between the shots of the band and the assassin, there's so many inconsistencies in the placement of the characters. For the last two images, I just like to rationalize it as Pickles immediately attempting to run away, then noticing that the rest of the band is still there and being like "Oh shit we're squaring up? Ok I guess". I know it's just so Nathan can be in the center when they use the Dethlights but I just think it's funny
Also in the second to last picture, the way Murderface, typically the most cowardly of the band, isn't looking at the assassin, but instead, is looking worriedly at Toki, makes my heart hurt. I adore their relationship
Tumblr media
Murderface is actually sleeping in Nathan's bed here. If you compare different shots of their bedrooms and beds, it's clear that this is Nathan's, you can tell from the striped pillowcase. I'm not gonna talk too much about this, mostly because I want to make a separate post talking about how Murderface is seen more than once sleeping in Nathan's bed when he's hurt/unwell. It's very sweet lol
ANYWAY! Thanks for reading these rambles, I love The Doomstar Requiem so much! I might make a post like this for Army of the Doomstar as well, and also just some analysis posts if I get the confidence lol. Big thanks to @ratskal for watching this a dozen times with me and pointing out things too. (I actually reached the max limit of pictures allowed in a post which is a little funny, I am so normal about this show /lying)

MTL as a Different Type of Show
I didn’t follow the prompt for this one, unless it counts as an All Magnus All The Time show. Anyway, more Possessed Magnus fic, although this chapter features startlingly little actual possession. But Magnus threatens to slash someone’s tires and punches someone else in the face, so there’s that!
Hair of the Dog, Paw of the Monkey - chapter 7

can you imagine just being Some Fucking Guy at the rock-a-roonie fantasy camp. like you saved up all this money because you just wanted to play guitar with some shitty washed-up one hit wonder from 1987 then all of a sudden there’s this guy with a stupid mustache getting into beef with some german 17-year-old and then this one counselor is just like lingering around in the background the whole time and then finally the day of your big concert arrives and that kid starts shoving cake down the mustache guy’s throat then the counselor steps in and then fucking dethklok shows up and it turns out the mustache guy was toki fucking wartooth and it’s like. i just wanted to play guitar man.
and unfortunately because we don’t get to see future instances of toki and magnus hanging out we don’t really KNOW if dethklok crashing the camp became news or not so now when you go back home and try to tell your friends that dethklok showed up at your music camp your friends are gonna be like “then everyone clapped huh” and walk away. no one will ever believe you.

Magnus for the character thing 👀
How I feel about this character: He is BRILLIANT, he is AMAZING. What an asshole bitch... but I still love him LOL
All the people I ship romantically with this character: MagnusxBailee  👀 MagnusxAbigail MagnusxNathan
My non-romantic OTP for this character: I’m assuming a BROTP so MagnusxMurderface hands down.
My unpopular opinion about this character: That I love him??? Also he deserves to be alive and well and healthy
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: Fucking LIVE
my OTP: MagnusxBailee sorry I don’t make the rules here.
my cross over ship: I...idk why but Starlord/ Peter QuillxMagnus came to mind??
a headcanon fact: Lol I don’t have one:
He was raised by his mom (who’s a single mom because his parents got divorced a little after he was born and the dad was never in his life after that.) And she was alcoholic who ignored her son because he reminded her of his father, which is why he’s seeks attention and approval.
From Lebanon, part Arabic/Italian in him.
And a reason why he’s the third worlds fastest guitarist is that, whenever he plays something that doesn’t go right or he doesn’t like, he has a huge fit and doesn’t play again until he calms down, and we know it takes a long time for him to calm down.
Magnus came to the United States when he was 13-14. He couldn’t stand his mom’s neglectfulness and how much everything he did reminded him of his fucked up father. From there, he surprising worked hard in school.  (Mainly a B average.) He stayed in New York at the time, where he had a distant relative lend him a room.
For College, he went to Berklee in Boston. (Yes College. Magnus is a smart man so I assume he went to College, but never fully got a degree.)
After having a bad day and being kicked out of multiple bars for his anger problems, Magnus just found a guitar in the dump and started repairing it, which lead to him playing it and being self taught. And that’s when he realized it eased his stress and anger. Until he got frustrated and gave up. But he always returned to it cause he liked the way it made him feel.
His Birthday is October 27th.
When Skiwsgaar first joined the band, Magnus helped him with his english because he understood the language barrier, from when he first entered the states.
Before being recruited by Dethklok, Magnus was pretty well known in the underground music. He would play for various groups, but never stuck with any of them because he felt they were mediocre compared to him. .
When Magnus agreed to be part of dethklok, The band (minus Pickles) were ecstatic to have him.
Magnus was aware of Pickles time in Snakes N Barrels, but was weary of his drumming skills. Seeing that he was a  80’s Glam rock singer prior to Dethklok.
Murderface was his biggest fan before Magnus joined Dethklok. He would sneak off from his grandparents house to go to the shows he was playing at. Magnus is partially the reason why Murderface started to play the bass, because he hoped that one day he’ll play with Magnus.
Nathan and Magnus would butt heads often usually due to creative input. But nonetheless they both had a neutral respect for each other.
Magnus and Charles didn’t interact much, but Magnus would always try to be calm around him. He was the one guy that Magnus didn’t want to piss off.
Magnus isn’t much of a sweet tooth. In Lebanon, most of the treats were dark chocolate or tart. So he never really liked the sweets Americans made.
One of Magnus’ fears is Athazagoraphobia, fear of being forgotten, ignored, or abandon.
Post-Dethklok? I was thinking after he left, he tried to join/form another band, even produced some songs for other bands as a songwriter. but again the anger issue was the problem and got him nowhere. No one would tolerate him as long as Dethklok did. So he went on to do his own music lessons, teaching kids but would get angry at them for not playing HIS way. Obviously that didn’t go well so he went into minimum wage jobs, like Working at the Grocery store, cashiers/servers at restaurants (not fast food places, he’ll never stoop that low according to him). After tired from his day to day job, he eventually found a flyer for Rock-a-rooni fantasy camp. Yes I’m sure he did get recognized by his involvement in The Hammer, but also because of when he was a songwriter for other bands.

Suikoden
The Playstation 1 was home to an assload of JRPG's. I know because I remember seeing a ton of them in the EB Games. I didn't play many though. I might be more of a fan of a few specific series' than a blanket JRPG Fan. I'm not sure why I chose Suikoden. I remember getting it from the locked case at Meijer. It looked like...well, like this:
Tumblr media
Asian...space...dynasty? A lot to unpack there. It did the weird-ass thing some games did where it was a double jewel case, but only 1 disc. Why? Did they have a ton of extra double cases? Was it for the prestige? I do not know. As you can see from the below screenshot, it's JRPG-ass JRPG. Menus? Check. Doofy enemies like Holly Boy and FurFur? Check. Colorfully dressed (also goofy) heroes with names like Gremio and Pahn? Check-a-rooni.
Tumblr media
Hi TED.
There's a prophecy, and warring kingdoms, and an unlikely hero emerges. You probably already knew that. There's a minigame for rock-paper-scissors type large scale battles, too. None of that is what made this game memorable for me.
Suikoden has 108 characters to find and add to your army. I love poking around in out-of-the-way places and being rewarded with something neat. Ever since Shining Force, I've also been a fan of games with large rosters where the characters play different from one another. It's a reason to go everywhere and talk to everyone.
Tumblr media
Now, 108 characters is a LOT - even with 6 character slots for battles.. Not all of them are meant to fight in combat, which brings me to the other thing that made Suikoden especially memorable for me. Early in Suikoden, you set up camp in an abandoned castle. Throughout the game you gradually add on to the castle and expand it. Many of your recruits will be warriors, wizards and the such. But you can also recruit a chef, and an engineer (who builds an ELEVATOR in your stone castle). One dude is a windowmaker who lets you customize your stained glass windows. Another opens an item shop. And so on.
Tumblr media
I love the feeling of being rooted in a place that is growing and changing over the course of the game. You can walk around and talk to your people and see them going about their business. It creates a sense that my character is a part of something larger. This extra layer of progression is something I've grown to love whenever it's in a game.
The vast majority of my JRPG love has been tied to Dragon Quest, Persona, and Final Fantasy. Suikoden made for a nice change of pace, and though I dabbled with II-V, I never got hooked on any the way I did with that first game. I am cautiously optimistic that Kickstarter spiritual successor Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes will recapture some of that old magic.

This one's a doozy!
So this guy, Dave Mustaine:
Tumblr media
Is basically this guy, Magnus Hammersmith:
Tumblr media
Same backstory and everything, if you think about it, so there's no doubt. Magnus was based on Dave...
And Davie boi is gonna be a camp counselor at this rock n roll fantasy camp:
Tumblr media
The concept is that you go there, and you meet rock stars, hang out with them, form a band, play a show with them, etc. Sound familiar?
So basically this is rock a roonie fantasy camp...
And Dave (Magnus) is gonna be a counselor there...
So technically, Magnus will be a counselor at a rock n roll fantasy camp. Um?!?! Guys, seriously. Am I the only one making this connection?! Idk how to feel about this...

Note
I loved your Magnus fic, is it possible to get more for the meme thing?
Michael Myers Resplendent, The Mountain GoatsI am ready for my close up today. Too long I’ve let my self-respect stand in my way.
The truth was he didn’t sign up to counsel at Rock-a-Rooni Fantasy Camp for the money. He was fine on money. Even if he wasn’t, spending a week in Deliverance County teaching sweaty losers the Three Chords of Pop Music was not a fair trade off. No, the truth was much more humiliating. The truth was he wanted to feel admired again. Even if it came from a bunch of beady-eyed, pock-faced mouth breathers.
He had this–he wouldn’t call it a fantasy, that was a bit extreme. Just a thought bubble that surfaced before bed, helped him fall asleep. He stands centerstage before a crowd of thousands. His hair flutters around his shoulders, the spotlight coaxing beads of sweat out of his skin and down his spine. Nathan bellows his name. A spark ignites in his chest. The crowd erupts.
The stage at camp is small, the crowd sparse. But as he leads that first lesson, basks the rapt gazes of a half-dozen wannabes, he feels it again, that spark. It’s dull, and quiet, but it’s there.

idk i think another part of the appeal of rikki for me actually goes back to this larger question i find myself thinking about all the time in regards to the overall worldbuilding of the series itself: how did dethklok effect the other musicians in the music industry, and in that same vein, how did they change the way music is talked about and critiqued? like, for example, award shows are either a thing of the past post-dethklok or they had to be completely rewritten to make it so dethklok either has their own award show or their own category, right? how did something like that effect the livelihood and morale of other musicians? surely there’s still fans of other artists out there, but you live in a world where no matter how great your work is, You Will Never Be Dethklok.
i look at something like the rock-a-roonie fantasy camp and magnus—the other rockstars there were obviously famous/talented enough to be big selling points, with magnus having been the literal main feature for that year’s camp. so it’s like, no matter how great you are, is your music is just like. gonna be selling badly for the rest of time? because how do you compare with the sixth largest economy in the world? what are you supposed to do when this band literally dictates how the world runs? resell your greatest hits and maybe do some special appearances at things for extra money? rebrand yourself and become known for something you’re not?
but to come back to my first point about rikki: i look at him and think “there’s no way you were always like this” and while i headcanon his alcoholism was because of other factors and happened before dethklok actually became famous, i think about his place as a musician in this larger picture and think “you’re doing this rebranding partly because you need the money and the reason you need the money is partially because of dethklok, isn’t it”
gotta hand it to him though being able to become the frontman of pickles’ old band—a group ALSO effected by the most powerful band in the world—is pretty fucking great. almost like a little payback, for all the other musicians out there. almost.

New fic alert. I'm starting a series detailing Magnus' experiences as a camp counselor at fantasy camp.
First chapter below cut and also on ao3
“So as you can see, I’m more than qualified for this position.” Magnus leans back in his chair, crossing his arms over his chest.
“Hmm…” The interviewer scratches the stubble on his neck as he scans his eyes over Magnus’ application. “How do I say this…”
Magnus’ jaw clenches.
“What’s the problem?”
“It’s just…” He sighs. “We here at Rock-a-Rooni Fantasy, well, we have certain standards we have to meet. And, to be honest, man, I don’t think you fit all of our qualifications. Sorry.”
“I don’t fit your qualifications?” Magnus snaps. “I’ve been playing the guitar since I was six! I actually have training. I studied theory!”
“Yes, you said all of that in your cover letter and resumé.” He frowns. “But…”
“But what?”
The interviewer hesitates.
“No one knows who you are.”
Magnus’ eye twitches and a long-dormant rage starts to course throughout his body, partially clouding his mind. But he still has enough lucidity to take a series of deep breaths, and allows his emotions to settle before speaking again.
“I’ll have you know…” His voice is still tense. “That I’ve had quite an expansive career.”
“Like what?”
“Well, in the late 80s I was in a punk band called Underground Victims.”
“Never heard of them.”
Magnus bristles.
“Then, uh, I played guitar in Void, which was a local grunge–”
“Never heard of them either.”
“Afterwards, I founded an Armenian folk punk band called–”
“Never heard of it.”
Magnus’ frown deepens.
“I didn’t even say the name of the band.”
“Doesn’t matter. I guarantee that none of our campers heard of them.”
Magnus scoffs.
“I don’t see how your campers being uncultured is my problem.”
“Well, it is. Because right now, I don’t think you’re fit to be a counselor. If we let any guy off the street with a guitar have a counselor position, it would defeat the purpose of the camp. The point of Rock-a-Rooni Fantasy Camp is to give our campers the chance to play with real rock stars. And, buddy, I don’t get ‘rock star’ from you.” The interviewer steeples his fingers. “So, is there anything else I’d know you from? On the off chance that you’re not completely wasting my time.”
Magnus feels a chill run up his spine.
Should he?
No. He doesn’t have to rely on them. That’s the whole point of this.
“I’m not nobody.” He insists. “People know ‘Magnus Hammersmith’.”
“Another obscure band?”
“No–” Magnus stares at him, bewildered. “That’s my name. It’s…it’s on my application!”
“Still haven’t heard of it.”
“I…” Magnus groans and holds his face in his hands. “I’m somebody, goddammit!”
“I’m sorry, man. I don’t think this is the place for you.”
The interviewer makes a move to stand up, while Magnus’s hands clench into fists. He’s going to fail his objective if he doesn’t do something. There’s no other option. He’s going to have to…
Magnus mutters something under his breath, and the interviewer stops in his tracks.
“What was that?”
“I said…” Magnus closes his eyes and sighs. “I was the original guitarist for Dethklok…”
He sits back down, mouth agape.
“Are you being serious?”
“Unfortunately, yes.” Magnus mumbles. “I still have credits for The Hammer, if you want to look it up.”
The interviewer pulls up a copy of the CD, which of course he had readily available, and begins flipping through the liner notes.
“Holy shit. That’s you?”
“Yeah, that’s me.” Magnus brow furrows as he keeps his gaze lowered.
“Why wouldn’t you open with that?”
“I thought my previous training and skill would–”
“I can’t believe this. You were in Dethklok!” The interviewer laughs giddily. “I always wondered: is Skwisgaar really that tall?”
“I never really noticed.” Magnus grumbles. “Can we continue the interview?”
“Fuck the interview: the job is yours!”
“But…” Magnus stares down at his application. “Isn’t there some kind of…I dunno, background check process?”
“Nah, not for former Dethklok members.” The interviewer stands up and extends a hand. “Welcome to Rock-a-Rooni Fantasy Camp!”
Magnus stares at the hand, dread trickling up his spine. Accepting his offer this way would only be sacrificing his artistic integrity. Surely there must be a way to fulfill his end of the mission while keeping his dignity intact.
“You know,” Magnus offers. “My poetry collection has been quite well-received–”
“Yeah, yeah, sure. You can write all the poetry you want once you get started.”
“I’m just saying that I’m known for plenty of things other than Dethklok.”
“Uh huh.”
“Just don’t make being in Dethklok ‘my thing’, okay?”
“Alright, yeah. We’ll work all this out with marketing.”
Magnus frowns, takes a deep breath, and shakes his hand.
Only a few minutes after signing the appropriate paperwork, Magnus is ushered into another room to get his photo taken.
“Smile!”
Magnus doesn’t, but the photographer takes the photo anyway.
The following week, Magnus finally receives his copy of the brochure in the mail.
Plastered right there on the front page is his blank, mildly-annoyed face, under the words:
Ex-Dethklok Guitarist
Magnus chucks the brochure into the trash and screams into his pillow.
